Ever wanted to somehow get away from the hustle and bustle of city life yet at the same time be in the country? Luckily, for many residents of the Western half of Bristol, it may be possible for this "have your cake and eat it" scenario to play out. Leigh woods is on the Somerset side of the Clifton suspension bridge, and there is a part just off Burwalls road called appropriately enough Burwalls wood. It's a nice scenic bit of National Trust land which slopes down towards the river and is home, according to a much faded notice, woodpeckers, peregrines, wild garlic and other things. It is very nice to be able to walk just over half an hour from my home and find a bit of wilderness to relax in. Or of course drive to, and park in Clifton, walk across the marvellous bridge, which is by itself a satisfying experience, and then find oneself in a natural environment. Very much recommended to break the monotony of urban life if you can spare the couple of hours or so.
