Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings Reviews | Rating 4.6 out of 5 stars (8 reviews)

Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings is located in Bromsgrove, United Kingdom on Stoke Heath. Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings is rated 4.6 out of 5 in the category museum in United Kingdom. Avoncroft Museum is home to more than 30 historic buildings, structures and other exhibits which have been rescued and re-housed rural Worcestershire. The Museum is spread over 19 acres and includes a wildflower meadow, period gardens, a traditional cider and perry orchard as well as the collection of buildings. Founded in 1963 it became England's first open-air museum, opening to the public in 1967 following the reconstruction of a 15th-century house rescued from Bromsgrove in mid 1962. Then, as now, our priority was to retain historic buildings in their original location. Over five decades, Avoncroft Museum has continued to rescue structures where this had not been achievable and the Museum now cares for a collection that ranges in date from the fourteenth-century Guesten Hall Roof from Worcester Cathedral to a 1990 Internet Payphone Kiosk part of the National Telephone Kiosk Collection housed at the Museum. Visitors will be able to enjoy the peaceful countryside as well as explore the historic buildings, enjoy the Edwardian Tea Room and discover the past.

I came here on a school trip as a 7 year-old, the best part of 50 or so years ago, and recall being transfixed by the wattle and daub Iron Age round house, and the granary, as I recall from childhood memory. It was one of my first 'dips' into living history, which has been maintained througout life as an archaeologist, and a Classics and History teacher. Avoncroft certainly contributed to this life-long interest.. and I am very grateful for that fact!! Have just seen the Museum on the TV... and been taken back again on a wonderful journey of reminiscence!! Oh to be 7 again....! Another visit as a 57 year old is now due!

Amazed at the process of moving and reconstructing these historic buildings. Fascinating. We spent a couple of hours exploring the site. Such a shame we couldn't go inside more due to Covid, but the site felt safe and well organised.

I had a fantastic time looking around Avoncroft Museum of Buildings. This unique collection of buildings really allows you to step back in time and into the shoes of a working person in a different era of time. Many of the buildings are salvaged from local sites. The engaging volunteers, such as the telephone operator are really friendly and help to bring the centre to life by drawing on their own personal experience.

What a fantastic place, pouring with rain when we got there but staff offered umbrellas for us to use. The weather did not dull the experience and the sun soon came out. Gatheted over many years the different buildings all told a story of local history which was interesting and informative. My favourite was the telephone exchange which was kindly operated by one of the staff for us while he told us how it all worked. Al in all an enjoyable few hours in lovely surroundings.

Excellent visitor attraction. Many old beautiful buildings including post windmill, stables, industrial buildings etc. Collection of telephone boxes & working exchange. Multi gauge miniature steam railway. Due to Covid some buildings were closed but doors & windows open to look through & railway not allowed to ride on. Despite these limitations it still took 4 hours to look round!! Needs a repeat visit when all the site is able to reopen. Still a very enjoyable experience. Mainly accessible for wheelchair/mobility scooter users just 1 area that isn't suitable but alternative route available so nothing needs to be missed due to mobility issues. Hand sanitiser stations around the site and felt as safe as is possible in current situation.

Lovely to see the mix of different buildings and the national collection of phone boxes. This sounds a bit dull but is surprisingly interesting and certainly good fun if you're with some teenagers who struggle to understand life before smartphones. The old windmill is brilliant and to see some of the industrial buildings such as the chain making forge shows you a great deal about the history of the area.

Avoncroft Museum is such a wonderful day out. I've been a handful of times and hoping to go much more in the next year now my Mom has a pass. We had our pre-wedding photo shoot here and that was the first time I went and fell in love with the place. It's lovely and relaxing to take a picnic (which I did for my Mom for Mother's Day) and so much space for children to run about and explore. There is a lovely tea room, which I'm yet to go to and in the past we've been able to buy drinks from the main hall, although I don't think that's always open so I would advise you to take your own drinks and snacks. The windmill is lovely, I've seen it in action and been up it which was really nice to experience. One of my favourites is the prefab home! I love it every time! I'm looking forward to the Nailers Cottage opening and the wildflower garden field too! There is a good gift shop with a mix of souvenirs.
