Beautiful gardens and surroundings around the abbey, I was impressed with the Rose garden and the various memorials in the garden and the flowers and layout were excellent in the garden. How some of the original stone was used in the building of the houses was impressive. A rally enjoyable afternoon.

Abbey garden always will be one of my favourite. Ruins to see, a lot of space to take a walk or just to have a picnic. Mini zoo with birds, squirrels running and jumping around, playground for children... This summer we have inflatable slide, mini golf and jumping for children as well for affordable prices. Entrance to garden is with no charge. Just it's sad that tennis place is not there anymore. But anyway. I will recommend this place for everyone who's coming to Bury.

The abbey was actually a Saxon foundation rather than Norman and housed the remains of St Edmund, martyred by the Vikings in 869AD. Edward the Confessor expanded the abbey and the Normans developed it further, making it one of the richest and largest in the country. This made it a primary target for Henry VIII and very little remains of it now. The gatehouse is a restoration/rebuild of the Victorian era and the West front of the abbey has been incorporated into a row of houses. Other than that there is an excavated crypt and various bits of flint wall but little of the splendour that must have existed at one time. The abbey is now set in the town park and was lovely to walk around the gardens. There were a few information boards too and we spent about an hour and a half walking around the park before heading back to the hotel and checking out. The town of Bury St Edmunds was a very pleasant market town and warranted a longer visit in itself, another time.

Beautiful gardens. So well kept and the added bonus of the birds too. So glad we are moving close and can come back often.

A haven gor old and young. Quiet places to sit. Interesting plants and specimen trees. Great play area for young children too. Would be good if the kiosk opened all year and provided some shelter for inclement weather.
