Magnificent building both inside and out. It is free to enter but donations are welcome. Very pleasant and helpful attendants inside. Some information leaflets provided as you enter. Additional reading materials inside. Photography welcome. So many stunning artifacts to look at and fascinating articles to read. It was a good warm temperature inside, seating inside too which was a welcome relief for my mobility issues. Definitely worth a visit.

Carlisle Priory was founded in 1122 by King Henry I, replacing earlier buildings on the site. Ten years later the king created the diocese of Carlisle and the priory church became Carlisle Cathedral. There is a gift shop in the Cathedral In an adjoining building, the undercroft of the fratry (formerly, a refectory of a monastery), is the ‘Prior’s Kitchen’ serving teas, coffee and hot and cold lunches. STOP PRESS Oct-20: The Grade I listed Fratry is now connected to Carlisle Cathedral via a new light-flooded sandstone cafe. The grand building that sits beside Carlisle Cathedral will be unfamiliar to many of the city’s residents but it is hoped that will change following the multi-million pound refurbishment.
