These large 300 million year old basalt rock crystals are used to explore the phenomenon of self organisation in nature. Life is the most abundant example of this order but the formation of crystals from molten rock or from freezing water are other examples which seem to be moving in the opposite direction to that which ENTROPY normally dictates. Much to discover and think about here as we ponder ourselves as "clever clay"
