Advanced Extraction Technology develops technical solutions for clients based on the emerging “green” technology of sub-critical water processing (SWP). SWP can replace alcohol & alcohol/water based processes in the extraction of polar components from biomass, as a consequence of the decline in polarity of the sub-critical water as temperature is increased significantly above the normal boiling point. In addition, the elevated temperature & pressure achieved in SWP result in extremely efficient extraction of otherwise poorly soluble high molecular weight components. It has been demonstrated that SWP can extract both complex carbohydrates at temperatures < 150°C, and at temperatures approaching 200°C the technique also extracts bioactive flavonoids & related polyphenols. The functional carbohydrates are employed as functional additives in food whilst the polyphenols have applications in healthcare, cosmetics and “nutraceuticals”.By employing a stepped temperature profile fractionation of the components of a raw material is often possible to generate multiple products. In addition to extraction of intact compounds, SWP can hydrolyse proteins as a function of temperature & residence time to generate peptides with a potential as additives in food & healthcare applications. At higher temperatures hydrolysis of carbohydrate polymers occurs to yield a source of fermentable sugars, which can be used to as a feedstock for production of both biofuels & renewable platform chemicals. Although often applied to specifically grown biomass, the above applications are increasingly being used in the upgrading of underutilised agri-food waste into a range of value added products.
