Ewhurst, Surrey St Peter & St Paul Set in the centre of Ewhurst, St Peter & St Paul has overlooked the Surrey Hills since 1190 and its eight bells have rung out village for over 500 years. About this church The church is quietly situated in the centre of Ewhurst village atop a small sandstone outcrop Wealden, surrounded by it’s churchyard. It is built in a cruciform plan of local sandstone with Horsham slab pitched roofs. The tower is crowned with a shingled broach spire. The oldest part of the church dates from around 1140 and it is the oldest and best known building in the village and is at the heart of the village in people’s minds whether or not they are churchgoers. The church is Grade I listed and contains work from every century since its foundation, the oldest parts being a Norman door on the south side of the nave (considered by Pevsner to contain 'the best piece of Norman decoration in Surrey') and the 13th century south transept. Most of the chancel and part of the north transept were rebuilt following collapse of the tower in 1839. The timber west porch dates from the 15th century. Unusually for such a small church it has a full peal of eight bells which have rung out since 1450. The south transept has medieval glass but the stained glass windows are mainly nineteenth century. The altar rail, pulpit and other items originated from the now destroyed chapel at Baynards Park.
