I went here for a few sessions a couple years ago, but decided it wasn't for me. I've trained at a fair few gyms over the years and I'm sorry to say this is probably the worst one I've been to. First of all, I'll say what's good. The level of coaching is good for Scotland and they try to make it cater for as broad a base as possible. As such, there's no beginner or advanced classes. If you're more seasoned, this is probably a drawback, but for beginners I think it's definitely beneficial. Now the bad. The guy that runs the place brings a real bad vibe. In the few sessions I went to saw him call people out and berate them over nothing multiple times. Nasty temper, really talks down to people, unpleasant to be around. The rest of the coaches seemed sound, and you can tell they're trying to bring a fun vibe, but it's fairly awkward watching this guy go in on people. Secondly the gym's in pretty bad nick. I cut myself on something sharp at floor level, and they didn't have any plasters. That's unreal. Hopefully they've done the place up since then, the changing rooms and everything, it all needs a refit and some new equip. Finally, there's a zero tolerance policy on lateness. This doesn't bother me so much but it's not as chill as most gyms in this regard. If you're a few minutes late, you're not getting in. Overall, you don't have that many options if you wana train in Edinburgh, so you have to weigh it up. If you're brand new I think you'll probably get on well with this, they do try to cater to beginners, and most of the coaches are friendly and informal. If you're coming from another gym, it might not be for you. They really don't like hard rolling, and as I said, the head coach is something else. If you've trained down south, you might find the level to be a bit lower than what you're used to, but for Scotland it's good. I'd give it a go, but it wasn't for me.

I have been training here for almost a year now and it is my first experience of any martial arts. The atmosphere is always friendly and the teaching is great! I feel like my skills and confidence have both improved so much and that wouldn't have been possible without the encouragement of everyone at Cross Combat.
I travelled to Edinburgh and had the chance to stop by Cross Combat for some training. Positives! Cross combat has a good schedule with lots of options and really nice members. The members were welcoming and great to train with! Negatives I was disappointed in the cleanliness of the gym and an incident that happened. With the cleanliness.. the facility is very unsanitary. The mats were very dirty and the washrooms hadn’t been cleaned in quite some time. The water isn’t drinkable and there’s quite a few smashed windows. Some upgrades would be good! The incident.. I noticed someone training with ringworm on their leg and told the owner that night. I had paid for 5 days and asked for a refund of any sort(I fully expected to pay for the 1 day that I did train), as I didn’t feel comfortable going back to train and taking the risk of getting ringworm. Out of respect I won’t go into much detail about the conversation, just that I was refused any refund and responded to in a very disappointing way. The experience was a let down as someone who was trying out a new gym(a gym that I was really excited to train at). I wish all the best to the members and hope the owner can treat the people that chose to pay him a little better.
Great training. Friendly people. Good vibes. Training with people more experienced than myself allows for advice mid roll so I never feel lost. So glad I chose this gym.
I was a complete novice starting at Cross Combat and mainly participated in BJJ. Even though I’m leaving because I didn’t have the time to continue, I found the sessions extremely fun (especially Georgio) and catered to novices like myself very well. There is a real sense of community, especially in the smaller midday classes, which was very friendly for newcomers. I found the classes technical and they explained the moves well to understand. The smaller group sessions were a lot more rewarding as you could ask more questions and get more help, so the busier evening sessions can be quite crammed for a lot of people. Overall, I would recommend novices to join this gym. I saw some negativity about the owner who I never came across, but the rest of the teachers were really cool guys and good at what they do.
This is where i started my bjj journey 7 years ago. Best place I've trained, hands down, and I've been to numerous other gyms and seminars around the world since. Classes are all action, incorporating a thorough warm-up that really helps you develop your grappling athleticism and awareness. Primary focus is always that everyone is positive and helpful and striving to be the best training partner possible. The culture here is the perfect environment for fun and fitness and also for legitimate technical grappling instruction, with many of the guys competing regularly and successfully. This place is excellent, as is the coaching, give it a shot, you'll be glad you did. See you there at some point!
An environment which is second to none. Has to be experienced to be believed. On top of that some highly skilled, informative instructors who can help develop anyone from the very beginner to the life-long martial artist. Learn self-defence, get fit AND have lots of fun all at the same time. Thank you Cross Combat!
Great staff, great atmosphere and great training partners for any ability set. Was just passing through from another town but I'll definitely be back here. They make it worth it! If you're thinking about joining - stop thinking and just get out there and do it. You won't regret it!
