Interesting and quite moving account of mining history. The setting is extraordinary, as if the miners had just left. An ex miner led the guided tour. I would recommend this as it takes in the winding engine house and reconstructed coal face. Do wear warm clothes though as this is mostly in unheated areas. The rest of the museum, including the exhibitions on two floors are fascinating. Too much to take in on one visit.

The National Mining Museum has a lovely cafe and gift shop for a snack and gifts, but that isn't why I visited. I was privileged to be given a tour from a guide who was himself a former miner at this facility. Because he was a career miner, he knew all the intricacies of mining and the museum. Both the guide and the museum brought to life the intense and necessary industry of Scottish coal mining, and at no moment during my visit did I find myself under stimulated. The visit was very much enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone with a few hours to spare.

I really enjoyed my visit to the National Mining Museum. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. There was a lot to see and do for adults and children. I especially enjoyed the trip "down" into the mineshaft, experiencing what it would really have been like underground. Find out about what Mining was like across Scotland from the earliest days to the closure of the last pit.

Fantastic! Jim did our tour and it was great. We all had a good time and it was so interesting! The shop has some lovely little souvenirs, and we all got something. Would definitely like to visit again, hopefully when the wee cafe is open again. Thank you for a great day out!

Nice museum with plenty of information about the history and dangers of mining in UK. The tour was nice mainly for being able to see the conditions and machinery (some even in motion). The gentleman working as a tour guide was friendly and answered our questions as well, though we maybe expected to hear more stories along the tour. Overall well worth the visit if you are in the surrounding area.

Great place marking the history and hardship of Scottish mining. We took our 10 and 12 year old on a Groupon deal for a Sunday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised. It provides a lot of detail if you are interested but not too long to be tedious. We are big fans of Beamish Museum but the guided tour here on mining is far superior as the guide had 25 years experience. Highly recommend for an afternoon out but think younger kids will struggle as we saw!
