RNLI Southend-on-Sea Lifeboat Station, Pier Hill, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 1EE, Essex, England, is entirely run by volunteers. They operate three lifeboats and a hovercraft from two separate stations, one at the shore end of Southend Pier and one at the seaward end. A lifeboat station was first established at Southend-on-Sea in 1879 and after many trials and tribulations over the years, a new shore boathouse was opened in 2004. The pier-head lifeboat house is a modern structure featuring an RNLI shop and a viewing gallery that is much enjoyed by visitors.

Love the little Lifeboat shop at the end of Southend Pier. The staff are always so welcoming and friendly and there is a nice little range of souvenirs and gifts on sale.

Well, unfortunately, it was closed when we got there. However we met two of the lovely volunteers for the RNLI shop in the sweet little vintage tea shop having tea after their shift. They were so friendly and open and informative that I just had to give them five stars anyway.

Tia is well worth a visit as you have a nice little souvenir shop with enthusiastic volunteers who will happily spend time with you explaining the work of the RNLI. There is also a nice little code shop cafeteria for a snack here and prices are reasonable. A word of warning though. The pier is a good mile long and is a pleasant walk to the end, but we could it sensible to take the train back as the feet do get tired!
