Beware accepting arbitration in small claims disputes. They are NOT there to offer justice or impartiality. The sole aim of the arbitration system is to remove your case from the courts list and they will threaten, cajole, twist and manipulate you in any way to close the case. Honesty and justice are not part of their vocabulary - avoid arbitration.

Staff rarely answer the phone at Exeter County Court, the receiver seems to be picked up and put straight down again often, which is frustrating and impolite. Staff at Exeter Court Court are lax at sending out orders, can take weeks and even arrive after hearing dates! The opening hours would help people trying to get in contact. . . .

Staff are really friendly and helpful ,nothing is too much trouble for them , the building is modern and well lite it is cleaned to a very high standard with a cafe area with vending nachines, the coffee is ok and food is fresh

This court failed to file my documents, which had been sent by registered post two days before the deadline. As a result I looked like a flake, the judge who had not received my documents in advance of the hearing, was not able to fully grasp the details of the case, and I received a spectacularly unfair hearing. He even tried to award costs against me, which is almost unheard of in the small claims court – he read from a book of law quoting one other precedent – and denied me leave to appeal. The court subsequently apologised for its incompetence & malpractice (without refunding the fees) and gave me leave to appeal, but my advice if you are planning to pursue a claim in the county court here is: DON'T. They're not on top of basic admin, phones are unanswered and emails receive a comedy response by someone who does not have a basic command of English grammar. Based on my experience, I wouldn't trust this court to judge the marrow competition in a village fete. This court will shake your faith in British justice.

Not a single member of the judiciary banged a gavel or shouted, “Order, order. I will have order in the court.” Had I known that I’d be so poorly served by HMCTS, I’d not have committed all those crimes in the first place.
