Located right next to University Library the Gallery displays the Hunterian Art collections from 16th century to the latest. The Whistler & Mackintosh paintings are the highlights. Hector's farewell by Hamilton , the rest on the flight to egypt by Jacques Stella , Christ and the woman by Dirck van Dalen are other notable works. Another section of the gallery is dedicated to exploring Gaelic identities.
First time I've ever visited the museum despite being a student of the university many years ago and a local boy. The museum is not all that large and the collections seems to be quite modest, at least what's on display when I visited. Fair to say that much of the permanent exhibition is a good collection of fine arts with "Artemisia drinking the ashes of her husband Mausolus" by Eramus Quellinus being my favourite. On the day of the visit there was also an exhibition of German Expressionism, which is more social commentary than fine arts. The Hunterian Art Gallery is also in the same building as the MacKintosh House which unlike the art gallery is not free.
Good place to visit some interesting items
Huge collection of animals hunting from Africa, industrial research and design, art painting, …… very education museum to all ages.
I adore this gallery. It's not overwhelming and the focus is on scottish artists with an eclectic mix of "rest of the world" too. Fabulous way to spend an hour in Glasgow's west end that isn't overpriced or faux.
Quite a small art gallery, many Scottish works. Had to book in advance due to covid, its free.
Free. A small museum with a finger in most pies. A personal collection that reflects the interests of the collector, from the macabre human body bits to the beautiful gem collection. Lovely building.
