I’ve tried to make this a balanced review… tried. Guildford BJJ is unlike any other club I’ve been to. Believe me, I’ve tried a few. Don’t get me wrong there are a few similarities which are ‘must haves’ like 1) a family/ friendly feel to the club, 2) Rolling is intense, 3) Be respectful to everyone 4) have fun BUT the differences outweigh easily. The training and guidance from Head Coach Jon is on another level. Where I’d been using the standard techniques from other clubs, Jon revamped my way of thinking providing me with simpler and more effective versions of the technique. Jon takes the time to explain the little details spurring the class to think more about our setup, positioning, counters and problem solving. Most importantly John genuinely takes his time with anyone who asks for help and is happy to sit with you and go through the steps. The Classes are relaxed, informative and fun. Everyone asks questions throughout and John is all too happy to go through them with you and the class. In my opinion Guildford BJJ is not all about ‘What belt am I?, how do i get the next stripe?, how quickly can i get a blue belt? or when will i be a purple belt?’ the main focus here is, Turn up, Listen and ask questions, train hard, keep it regular and your skills will grow.

I’ve had the pleasure of being taught by Jon for the past 2 years and what a 2 years it has been. Jon is a professional, friendly and knowledgable coach who is not only a fantastic coach but also very welcoming especially for newcomers and beginners as he makes it so easy and so fun to get started on your BJJ Journey. Brilliant club, awesome classes and a very welcoming coach who is willing to spend as much time as you need to progress through the belt grading system!

If there was a clinical diagnosis for being addicted to BJJ I would have it. And I wouldn’t train anywhere but with Jon. From day one his teaching style has married exactly with how I learn. And that is not a happy coincidence. In fact I could have had any learning style and this would still be the case; Jon tailors his method and approach to fit precisely each different person he teaches. It is this quality that sets him apart from every other teacher, coach, mentor (incident further nouns as necessary) I’ve ever had. It would probably be too grandiose to say that BJJ has changed my life…well there you go I’ve said it now, and Jon’s patience, knowledge and enthusiasm has played a huge role in that. I could not recommend Guildford Jiu Jitsu more highly.

Walking through the door as an absolute beginner to BJJ and meeting Jon for the first time I quickly found myself counting down to the next session (unusual for me). Jon is incredibly passionate about BJJ which shines through in his friendly, approachable and professional teaching style. The classes reflect this everyone in the group being genuinely friendly and committed to helping each other. Jon takes time to carefully explain techniques and make sure you understand them if you're struggling to get to grips with it. The club reflects Jon's passion and is the perfect place to learn BJJ whether it's for the love of the sport or for the practicalities of self-defence. 5 stars doesn't do this justice, I couldn't rate both Jon and the club highly enough

Thanks to Jon’s teachings, his patience and knowledge, I’ve found myself enjoying jiu Jitsu day after day at Guildford BJJ. If you want to learn how to be comfortable under stressful conditions, there isn’t a teacher better to learn from.

I've trained with Jon Collins for almost 8 years, for me his skill as a teacher & coach is to cut out all of the noise and has the ability to teach useable high percentage techniques. Plus you wont find another teacher who consistently has a beaming smile on their face whilst sharing knowledge with the chosen audience. If you are in and around the Guildford area and have an interest in grappling whether its self defence, sport or MMA drop in and take a class with Jon and the team you wont regret it.

I have been training alongside Jon for the past 3 years and I can wholeheartedly say that I have never met someone more passionate about teaching. The quality of instruction I have received as one of his students has been incredible and I cannot recommend his school enough. If you are close to or willing to travel to Guildford for brazilian jiu jitsu or any form of grapplung, I would highly highly recommend Jon Collins Guildford Jiu Jitsu be your choice of school. This will be one of those decisions you look back on in years to come and wish you started sooner.
