A talented operation of selling fakes as expensive originals. I found them through invaluable and therefore thought that John Nicholson would have been a verified auction house that I could trust. I purchased a pair of “Republic period famille rose Chinese vases”, which only after they arrived did I find out they were clearly contemporary knock-offs- so obvious it was written on the bottom (which just so happened to have not been photographed). In the same sale I was interested in a crab encased in amber, but at the last moment I called up the auction house and asked to speak with their specialist- I work in the art industry and told him this before asking “are you sure that’s amber and not resin”? The employee then whispered to me that it was definitely resin. So I’m glad that whoever I spoke to was honest, but to clearly lie about the item in their catalogue is pretty low. I’m lucky I wasn’t scammed on another lot by them. For the piece I did purchase (under the guise it wasn’t a clear fake) I then had to arrange for my shipping externally. Not a common practice with more reputable auction houses, and again feeling mislead by the statement of the auction house on their terms. I was sent to two different courier services which were absolutely in on the scamming. Trying to charge 3X the going rate for packing and shipping (just for it to go to London!). Good thing I knew a shipper from previous purchases at other auctions, and they picked it up. All together I would recommend avoiding John Nicholson. It’s my inference from my experience that they’re taking advantage of the current UK lockdown and misattributing items for their own greed. To selectively avoid using images that go against their description just further entrenches my opinion of them- these guys are not to be trusted.

Bought an item on their online auction and drove two hours to pick it up. Only to realise that it was a damaged piece which was once repaired with cracks that are very obvious but hidden/not photographed in the catalogue. When asked about it in person they said it is my responsibility to ask for a condition report which I understand but a damage that splits the object into two is not a minor damage included in a condition report — it’s something to majorly consider as an auction house whether it is good enough to sell at all as a lot in their auction. And then to describe the piece in “good condition” and not mention the repair at all in the description! Auction house washed their hands of any responsibility for condition of items. Terrible business mentality — feel scammed. Will not be participating in any of their auctions again and want to warn everyone else to please be cautious.

Having near bid in a live online auction before, I can highly recommend the thrill of the chase!
