This is a disgraceful place. The staff simply have no idea what is going on and do not have any consideration for their customers.

The last place to get cheated before leaving UK ! If you see the queue continuing outside of the sign, you should expect more than 1 hour waiting time and consider using Fast Track service or abandoning your refund if you are short on time. I was forced to wait to 2 hours this day… Once you get to the counter, the clerk recommended to choose CASH refund but DO NOT ! When I insisted to refund to my credit card, they took the attached picture with my iPhone, then he told me that they could only refund with CASH. It apparently says my refund to be received would be 148.10 after subtracting their surcharge. But I got only 14,000 JPY what ? Their cash rate on that day was around 1 GBP 122.72 JPY, bad rate, but my refund should around 18,000 JPY. The difference of 4,000 JPY went to somewhere… maybe his pocket ? I could see many people were complaining about bad exchange rate but after waiting 2 hours there, most of us had no time and guts to fight with them… I expect PM Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson should consider fixing this system as soon as possible.

There was a very nice and qualified employee checking the goods and forms. Unfortunately Travelex newly deducts a service charge for credit card refunds too. Before there has been one just on cash refunds.

1.Dishonest system - We made purchases in Italy in EUR, but claiming back our vat from Travelex Heathrow Airport T2. We asked to have the refund back to our credit card in purchased currency to avoid the conversion fee. Total refund after Planet/Premier Tax Free’s fee is total of 314.60EUR. They charged 3.70Pounds per receipt as a counter service fee. We have 4 receipts, so the counter service fee is 14.80Pounds. Technically, this is your calculation 314.60EUR(282.63Pounds according to ex currency app) - 14.80Pounds 267.83Pounds (money you should receive back). Unfortunately, their system exchanges EUR to Pounds for you even if you just want the original purchased currency returned to your credit card, so at the end, they gave us the receipt of final refund 252.50Pounds. 15.23Pounds is missing due to their conversion rate. 2.Rude staff- All of their staff are Indians except the supervisor who’s African. The supervisor told the Indian lady to do what we requested, but the Indian lady kept giving us attitude and kept saying that it’s done, she doesn’t want to redo her work. The supervisor had to tell her step by step because she was trying to make an excuse of not helping us separate our refunds, hence it’s her job. I understand that they are usually rude as when I went to India, their immigration officers are also very rude for no reason. They are up themselves even though we were so polite to her, but what can we do, that’s why they still work as employees and not bosses. 3.Missing receipt - we didn’t get all of our vat refund receipts from Travelex. The lady only gave one receipt from Premier Tax free, but we also have another refund from Global Blue and she refused to give us that receipt because she mistakenly threw it in the bin. We asked for the reprint of the receipt, but her excuse was she can’t reprint the receipt. Obviously, it’s not our fault that she threw our receipt in the bin, but yet refused to print out a new receipt to correct her mistake.

Strongly recommend all travellers to use credit card. These vultures will convert your VAT claim into your local currency at crazy bad rates. They mislead you and portray like you don’t have an option to do anything other than accept in your local currency. This definitely left a bad taste in my mouth after an overall pleasant UK experience. I hope that Heathrow reconsiders using Travelex as their VAT refund agents!

Going on past reviews I was expecting the worst! So I arrived 4 hours before my flight just in case. When I arrived at the Travelex counter, there was no queue. 10 mins later I was packing my suitcase with the whole process completed. I had a total of 6 forms with a charge of 3.5 GBP per sheet. I’m sure it’s not the cheapest around but convenience has a price. Just remember to request a refund to your card. Cash might sound nice but as with all cash transactions in foreign countries, the exchange rate that Travelex offers might not suit the savvy traveler.
