HLF (Huddersfield Literature Festival) is an annual book festival that takes place in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, over 10 days in March. Showcasing emerging writers and artists alongside major names, the Festival offers a diverse programme of author talks, workshops, multi-arts performances, community-led projects, spoken word, BAME, LGBTQ+ and family friendly events. The Festival was a finalist in the prestigious Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards in 2016 & 2017, and winner of the Examiner Community Award for Arts 2017. Founded in 2006, the Festival's Patrons are Sir Patrick Stewart OBE and Lemn Sissay MBE. HLF promotes accessibility and inclusivity through free and affordable events, showcasing LGBTQ+ and BAME performers and those with disabilities, and creating an ‘Events Around Autism’ strand. As far as possible we use accessible venues and some of our events have Stagetext subtitling to make them accessible for audiences who are deaf, deafened and hard of hearing. There are also AccessAble Access Guides to key venues and we offer Disability Awareness training for our volunteers. Our volunteering programme is accredited with a Kirklees Volunteering Quality Award. HLF also works closeley with local schools and community groups to ensure that events represent the diversity within the region and that we reach out to communities that might not otherwise engage with the Festival.
