Thoroughly enjoyed our visit in 2019. Plan to spend majority of a day here. There’s so much to see and I would love to go back. Well with the time.

I went here a few weeks ago but no chance to write my reviews and now just have look inside the beautiful Fort George online by my photos. . Please make sure to follow me and give me a like if you enjoy my photos. . Following the 1746 defeat at Culloden of Bonnie Prince Charlie, George II created the ultimate defence against further Jacobite unrest. The result, Fort George, is the mightiest artillery fortification in Britain, if not Europe. . Its garrison buildings, artillery defences bristling with cannon, and a superb collection of arms - including bayoneted muskets, pikes, swords and ammunition pouches - provide a fascinating insight into 118th-century military life. . Fort George sits behind its massive grass-topped artillery defences on an isolated spit of land jutting west into the Moray Firth at Ardersier, 11 miles northeast of Inverness. Conceived in the immediate aftermath of the 1745 uprising and the nearby Battle of Culloden that concluded it, Fort George was intended to be a once and for all solution to the threat posed by the Highlands, and the Jacobites in particular. . The man behind Fort George was William Skinner, the King's Military Engineer for North Britain. His original proposals were to build a fortress on the site of the ruins of an artillery fort Cromwells forces had built at Inverness in the years up to 1657. . Access is across the level ground with some areas of granite sets to cross, where visitors using wheelchairs would need assistance. The battlements have six sloped grass and concrete access ramps at a 20 slope. There is a slight step leading to the barrack rooms where all audio buttons and displays are accessible. . Felt a little let down in the fort maybe due to covid19. Not much to do maybe if I was ex military would have found it more interesting

Wonderful place to visit if you are staying or passing Inverness, the drive out to Fort George is nice and not too far. The Fort is like a step back in time as its very well preserved and is still active to this day. The included audio tour is a great addition and brings a wealth of information, would definitely recommend!
