The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is a community theatre within the City of York, and it has been managed by a charitable trust since 2001. The trust provides a state-of-the-art performance venue, catering for both local amateur and touring professional performers. The Management Board has a team of volunteers helping the theatre in a number of different ways. The technical side consists of a Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Manager, and they are responsible for the organisation and safety of each production. They oversee a stage crew which is responsible for lighting, sound and flying. The front of house team is there to ensure the comfort and safety of the audience, and assist in showing people to their seats, and in selling refreshments and programmes. During a performance, there are two Duty Managers/Board Members present. There are 362 seats, each with an unrestricted view of the stage. Since 2003 a major series of refurbishments has been undertaken, including the replacement of the auditorium seats and carpets, the redecoration of the interior, the upgrading of the stage lighting and the overhaul of the sound system The Joseph Rowntree Theatre is available for hire for many types of performances and events.
