I was a pupil at Exchange a few years ago before completing my third six at another set. Obviously, I have used a pseudonym for anonymity. It is currently Pupillage season and prospective pupils should know that Exchange’s literature is quite misleading. Exchange touts itself as a ‘top set’ comparable to large London sets. This is not true: cases are generally fought in the county courts as opposed to high courts, and the work you do not work on prestigious cases. Industrial disease and PI is the bread and butter of Exchange. It’s commercial area is under-developed with a mediocre reputation. Whilst it is true that a few practitioners are instructed by London firms, the majority are not. Don’t be fooled: City firms will only go to Exchange if the client is short of funds. It is nobody’s first choice. Exchange does not have a national presence as it claims. Further, the size and rapid growth of the set has led to problems with management. Sure- the annual profit is rising, but that is because there are so many tenants! The amount earned per tenant is fairly low. This is why the Pupillage award- currently 27.5k- is so low. Good Northern sets pay 40k plus. I hope Exchange are more honest to students in future.
