There is a shared walking and cycling oath running alongside the railway lines, safely behind a fence. Quite popular especially in wet weather when more pleasant and rural route become impassible due to the rain and bad drainage.
Picnic in the caroark because covid 19 has closed everywhere.
This is an amazing walk if you're looking for time out away from the noise of the city. Take the full walk which takes around two hours approx to bishop Auckland and if you really want to give it a go try walking to saltburn further down the line
