If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. 2nd best cup of tea in a polystyrene cup I have ever had.

Justice has to be served but remember the legal profession doesn't want to rock the boat. Basically any case boils down to emotion and how underhanded the other party is.

I found it dismally inefficient and lacking in more than the most basic amenities. The underground cells are smelly, claustrophobic and dirty without one window. I'd not like to work there. Many of the people held there are subsequently found not guilty, so don't be quick to state that the people in those cells deserve to be there. They are all human too.

I recently appeared here as a pursuer in a small claims court action. Having waited for over two hours, sitting silently and patiently through the breathtakingly inefficient process of lawyers and sheriffs sifting through paperwork, I expected that my case might at least get some reasonable attention after the wait, having paid 73 for the service. I expected to be able to articulate and present my case for at least 10 minutes or so, after which the defender would be given the opportunity to present their defence. I imagined the sheriff might then ask a few clarifying questions to each of us, and then make a judgement. This was based on what I'd read in the online guides, and seemed like a reasonable expectation. What actually happened was the sheriff (to whom we were expected to grovel) summarised her understanding of our previously submitted lodgings, having skimmed some of them in advance, and asked one or two specific questions to both me and the defender, that illuminated only minor details of the case to the exclusion of very important background, details and context. The defender was allowed to interrupt me repeatedly. Given the nature of this justice system, and the Dark Ages style subjugation inflicted upon both pursuers and defenders under a sheriff, I knew a favourable outcome for me depended on my not speaking out of turn, so felt unable to coherently or effectively make my case. Instead of hearing both sides of our dispute in full (which wouldn't have taken more than 10 minutes or so each), the sheriff instead advised us to go and sit in a room and figure it out amongst ourselves (making me immediately wonder why I'd paid the 73 fee, not to mention my taxes!). Luckily we were able to reach a resolution, but there is no doubt in my mind I left with an unfair deal, having been rushed through a chaotic process under a dismissive authority. Disgraceful.
