Beautiful synagogue with a fascinating history. If you can go on a tour (email the caretaker, Jerry), I highly, highly recommend it. Jerry's tour is incredibly interesting and well-researched, and gives an excellent overview of not only the history of Plymouth and the Jews who lived there, but Jewish life in England during different periods. If you are in the area, it is definitely worth a visit!

In my opinion the most beautiful synagogue in the UK; certainly the best example of a Georgian synagogue; very plain and inconspicuous outside; splendidly baroque interior. The gilded Torah ark in particular is spectacular. Jerry is a fantastically knowledgeable and dedicated curator, and the congregation is very friendly and welcoming. Well worth visiting Plymouth to see this gem of a building, if you have even a passing interest in Jewish history or sacred architecture.
