Lovely park with wonderful character and charm, including beautiful walls of stone and the magical backdrop of the ruins of Reading Abbey (which was founded by Henry I in the 1100s). Also home to the Maiwand Lion. Forbury Gardens is a delightful experience on a relaxing sunny afternoon, and be sure to grab a wrap whilst you're there!

A very pleasant and peaceful park makes a useful escape from the busy Reading town centre. There is a shop in the park but it was closed on the Saturday afternoon when we visited. The park has a well designed fountain made of stones set in concrete. The other main feature is the Maiwand Lion statue which tops a war memorial. The ripped lion definitely looks like it's spent some time at the local gym.
A very interesting park as you have the old and the new together in one park and grounds. This is a nice place to sit and relax, plenty of benches here. The old gates as you walk in i found very interesting because is shows life and and time gone by, so many people would have passed through those gates over the years. The lion statue is beautiful and very big. a very interesting park to visit.
Once the outer court of the famous Abbey, Forbury Gardens were acquired and open for public use in the 1800's. The gardens are beautifully laid out and filled with historical importance. The mound fortification from the English civil War is still prominent. An iconic part of Reading's identity, the Maiwand lion, is a hugely impressive memorial to the over 300 British servicemen of the Royal Berkshire regiment who lost their lives in the battle of Maiwand in 1880. There is an obelisk style structure topped with a celtic cross which was constructed in honour of King Henry 1st who in the 1100's had the internationally renouned Reading Abbey built (After his death, the King was laid to rest under the Abbey's altar. Forbury Gardens is definitely worth your time along with the neighbouring Abbey ruins.
This is a nice public garden in the middle of Reading with plenty of space to cater for most tastes. The centrepiece is the War Memorial stopped with a giant lion, and there is a mound providing a view over the gardens. Perhaps this was once a castle mound, although with its proximity to the Courts, perhaps in olde tymes it was the site of the gallows? There is a bandstand which could bed used for concerts. Of course, there are also the old Abbey ruins but not remains of those!
