I visited this church a couple of years ago to see where my father spent several years of his childhood in the St Mary’s Orphanage for boys adjoining the church. He had been an altar boy in the church and could recite the Lords Prayer in Latin. He was not actually an orphan but was not wanted as a boy by his single mother or Grandparents so was sent there about 1919 to 1925. This was how things were in those days. When he was 16 years old he was going to be sent to Canada presumably by the Catholic Emigration Society but was saved by meeting my mother one day in a park. Her father had been to Canada many years before and said it was a harsh and dreadful place and offered to take my father in as a lodger and well, as they say, the rest is history. My father never criticised the orphanage but ensured that my sister and I had a wonderful and happy family childhood and he made his way in the world with no bitterness about the appalling way his family abandoned him as a child but, as I have said, those were different times. The orphanage buildings are no longer and the church property is now abutted by modern housing.

This is a wonderful place to visit for a quiet days retreat. It is packed with fascinating history from the Reformation.. a hidden chapel in the hayloft where a priest disguised as a shepherd would risk death by celebrating mass daily. News spread via a network of secret Catholics and they would turn in the direction of the Chapel to pray as they knew that The Blessed Sacrament was hidden there. There is so much to see... I would recommend that you ask for a guided tour. Walk and pray The Stations of The Bible. Don't miss the very simple and unassuming grave of Hillare Belloc and read about his connection to The Shrine.
