On 20 April 1960, it was officially opened by the Duchess of Kent Still opening and working to this day Kingsferry Bridge has been raised over 100,000 times during its lifetime; each lift has to be recorded. The bridge is a combined road and railway vertical-lift bridge. It carries a 24-foot (7.3m) wide two-lane road, a 6-foot (1.8m) wide footpath and a single-track electrified railway line. Although the railway operates by electrified third rail, there is no electrification over the moving section of the bridge. To cross the bridge, electric trains coast across the gap in the electrification.

After driving over the bridges for many years, we decided to take a walk underneath them! My daughter loved exploring! Next time we'll probably walk further along the saxon shore way... wearing wellies!

The Kingsferry Bridge opened on 20-Oct-1960 & is a combined road & railway vertical-lift bridge that connects the Isle of Sheppey to mainland Kent in South East England. The seven-span bridge has a central lifting span that is raised up to 20 times per day to allow ships to pass underneath.

The iconic King's ferry bridge standing proud against the back drop of the new bridge. But this is almost forgotten about until the new bridge has a problem and has to close. Then it comes back to life again as everyone goes back to her.

Excellent bridge. Crosses a body of water. This is exactly the sort of thing a bridge should do. (See also having a troll under it.) People these days seem to prefer the new bridge, but that's not a lifting bridge and therefore vastly inferior, in my humble opinion.
