Awesome. Absolutely awesome. There is no other word. Awesome!! The triple-expansion is truly massive at 1000 tons and 5 or 6 storeys high. To walk into that engine hall is a truly jaw-dropping experience. These engines are HUGE!! Lots of history about the engines and the building. VERY worth going on a steaming day to see the great engine working. And - do get yourself a free guided tour lasting about an hour as the guides are extremely knowledgeable; our guide, John Scholefield (?) was very knowledgeable, and it was an utter pleasure to be escorted around the exhibits by him. And do go and see the mercury arc rectifiers..... What else can I say......? Just go!!

This is somewhere we've been meaning to visit for years and finally did yesterday. The building is huge, but the sheer scale of the inside and the size of the steam engines just takes your breath away. We went on a guided tour which was informative and enabled us to go climb up to the top of the building, giving different view points of the whole building and the engines opposite. Loved the mercury rectifier arcs in the basement. They were like something off Doctor Who or Flash Gordon. The cafe served absolutely delicious butternut squash soup and carrot cake which was very reasonably priced. A really enjoyable afternoon out and we will definitely go for a return visit.

I had the good fortune to watch a band play here. The acoustics proved to be rather impressive in how they complemented the playing. The museum is clearly fascinating, although closed as a museum when I visited. I shall return
