A truely ‘Great Britain’! Today I learnt he was born here, in Wantage. A pretty little market town of historic buildings, boutique shops and a local market on a Wednesday and Saturday.
Alfred The Great (Alfred The Great - October 26th 849) had his birth here in Wantage. Remembered to have been the bulwark of defense against the Danes (what we call Normans) was glorified by the English people with the nickname of \the Great\. He was the first king of Wessex to be called King of England. Nominated saint by the Catholic Church, he was a cultured and Just man, spread the culture and the Latin texts. Worth a photo Alfredo Il Grande ( Alfred The great - 26 ottobre 849 ) ebbe proprio qui a Wantage i suoi natali.
