A creation of ex local dairy farmer, the late Bob Jones, Welshpool Mid Wales Airport began as little more than a grass runway in the late 1980s. From 1990, a tarmac runway, hangers and office space sprang up with the help of local investment. Until his untimely death in early 2012, Bob was an integral part of the local community and the airport itself, developing it to the site it is today. His legacy is continued by his family and the airport is still expanding. The runway is quite long for the size of the airport, over 1000m of tarmac. Both fuel and hangerage is available at reasonable prices. There are three aviation schools at the airport, flying fixed wing aircraft, helicopters or microlights. Crucially, the airport is home to one of the four Air Ambulances in Wales. There is an annual Air show that grows in size and popularity each year and even a brand new cafe that has opened overlooking the runway.
Lovely airport to approach from the air, nice welcome and great facilities, ie lovely cafe and dig and watch the activities of the airport.
Very welcoming. Helpful service. Will be back.
Flew in today, lovely location. So pretty and very Heli friendly. Nice to see a GA Airfield so busy. Beaut little cafe with good coffee and lovely basic food. It has a fab outdoor seating terrace, perfect for watching the planes & helis.
