The Tunnel Tour was well worth taking. Very informative and interesting. Nice little café - although limited fare, it was tasty and well priced.
I'm quite local but never knew the history of Fort Amherst. A very interesting place to visit and the staff are very knowledgeable. The tunnels are well worth going into (you have to book) - our guide Vic made it a very entertaining tour, and there are hundreds of years of history in there to see. It's not a huge place though so I'd say expect to spend about half a day there.
I had been curious about the historic fortifications around Chatham, had some time to kill so I dropped in to have a look at Fort Amherst, as luck would have it, just in time for a guided tour. Well worth the small charge. A very good insight into how life would have been for those billeted there as well as the tactical thinking behind the design of the fort. There is also a bit of a 'wow' factor behind size and the quality of the works. Tour probably raised more questions than it answered - which is good.

What an amazing place and Vic the guide was not only highly knowledgeable about the fort he was funny and very amusing. Very reasonable prices and l can highly recommend the cafe
