The Silk Road

This is a coal tax historical landmark. They were positioned in the 1860s and form an irregular loop between 12 and 18 miles from central London, to mark the points where taxes on coal were due to the Corporation of London. There were originally around 280 posts of which 210 remain. For as interesting as these can be, they are only a tangible and sad reminder of the sometimes unjust power of the government exercised on its citizens, which tends to take money from people who have no choice. At that time coal was as essential as bread and water, as it was the only means not to freeze to death in the then subzero winters of England. Some of these landmarks are better maintained than others.
