William Walker was a diver who worked to shore up the foundations of Winchester Cathedral. He cycled home at weekends to South Norwood after spending hours working in the dark and underwater to reinforce the walls with concrete, before they could finally pump out the water and complete repairs with brick. He also worked on the Blackwall Tunnel and met King George V twice.
