This chimney is all that is left of a cottage lived in many years ago by the preacher and author of 'Pilgrim's Progress'. Bunyan wrote Pilgrim's Progress using features of the countryside of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. As a non-conformist preacher in a country which at that time, was somewhat intolerant, he found himself imprisoned for his efforts on a number of occasions. The Pilgrim's Progress has been translated into 200 languages and has never been out of print. A couple of hundred yards away is a pub named after Bunyan with a picture of him and the chimney on it.
