Impressive and interesting place to visit, plenty of helpful and informative staff. Makes a change from grand stately homes, see how many ordinary people lived. Covid safe, bookings only to control numbers, masks worn indoors, sanitiser available. One way system guides you around, and interactive device gives lots of background info. Toilets open, cafe and shop closed for now, as are some areas (which are being slowly opened up). Lots of easy parking, and good signage from the centre of Southwell.
A nice to visit interesting to see take a picnic lots of space to sit and for children to play no shop or cafe at this time.
Well worth a visit. Arrive before 11 to obtain a place on the outside guided tour. Gives a very good overview of the history of the workhouse. Segregation comes through as one of the main themes. Excellent soup in the cafe and very pleasant staff. Another National Trust place worth the visit. Free car parking.
Brilliant, just brilliant. You must visit to find out why. Very thought provoking and poignant. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers. A good, two hour visit.
An interesting and educational day out for children and adults alike, getting a taste of life in a Victorian Workhouse. Fabulous vegetable garden for gardening enthusiasts.
Really liked it here. Very atmospheric. Very sad to think of all those people passing through and the separation of families. It's a really well presented place with the structure of the building allowed to shine through. The tours are really great and well worth going on. Very interesting to hear all the stories. I liked the different decades on display to show the use of the building. Don't miss the graffiti on the outside walls away from the master's view. It was amazing to see the restoration work the National Trust did. Would recommend a visit.
Such a fascinating place to spend a few hours. In terms of what the National Trust is about it's definitely 5 star though for kids I'd give it 4 as there isn't a great deal for them. No play area though that's such a minor point and there are plenty of hand on things for children to do like dressing up and crafts. So much to see and experience and the staff are great. Cafe is handy too.
